Rent a Car at Tivat Airport (TIV): A Practical Montenegro Guide

Tivat Airport (TIV) is the most convenient gateway to Montenegro's coast. It's small, it sits right on the Bay of Kotor, and from the moment you step out of arrivals you're already within a short drive of the most beautiful stretch of the Adriatic. Renting a car here turns that proximity into a real advantage — you skip taxi queues and bus timetables and start your trip on your own schedule.

How the meet-on-arrival works

TIV is compact, so there's no need for an off-site lot or a shuttle bus. With Montrent, your car is brought to the airport and a representative meets you near the arrivals exit, usually holding a name sign.

Here's the flow:

  1. Land, clear passport control, and collect your luggage.
  2. Walk out through the arrivals door — the terminal is tiny, so this takes minutes.
  3. Look for your Montrent representative by the exit. If you can't spot each other, a quick call or message sorts it out.
  4. You do a short walk-around of the car together, check the paperwork, and get the keys.

Because everything happens right at the airport, there's no transfer to a remote office and no waiting for a van. If your flight is delayed, the pickup simply shifts with it — just keep your contact details current at booking.

What to have ready

To keep the handover quick, have these on hand:

  • Driver's licence — your full national licence. EU and most national licences are accepted; depending on your nationality an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended, so check before you fly.
  • Passport or ID — for the rental agreement.
  • The booking details — your name and reservation reference.
  • A payment card in the main driver's name for the deposit.

Montrent uses pay-at-pickup, so there's no online prepayment — you settle at the airport. Prices are shown transparently when you book, the fuel policy is full-to-full (you get a full tank and return it full), and cancellation is free if your plans change. If you're planning to cross into a neighbouring country, declare it at booking so the paperwork (green card, cross-border fee where it applies) is ready.

Driving out toward Kotor and Budva

This is where TIV shines. The airport sits between two of the coast's headline destinations, and the drive is short:

Destination Approx. drive time
Tivat town & Porto Montenegro ~5-10 min
Kotor (old town) ~15-20 min
Budva ~25-40 min
Herceg Novi ~40-50 min

Head north along the bay and you reach Kotor's medieval walls in well under half an hour. Head south over the hill toward Budva for the beaches and nightlife. Both routes are scenic and easy to follow.

A few local notes for the first hour behind the wheel:

  • You drive on the right. Seatbelts are mandatory and the alcohol limit is near-zero (around 0.03%).
  • Town limits are usually 50 km/h, open road 80, and up to 100-130 only where signed. The motorway network is limited.
  • The bay and mountain roads are winding — they're stunning but slow, so allow extra time and don't rush the hairpins.
  • For Kotor's old town, remember it's pedestrian/ZTL: park in the paid lots outside the walls rather than driving in.
  • Roughly mid-November to late March you must carry winter tyres or chains, especially if you head inland or north.

Why TIV suits a coastal trip

If the Bay of Kotor, Budva Riviera, or Sveti Stefan are on your list, Tivat is almost always the smarter arrival point than Podgorica. You land closer to the water, the handover is faster because the terminal is small, and you're driving the scenic coast road within minutes instead of crossing the country first. For a beach-and-bay itinerary, that can save you over an hour each way compared with arriving inland at Podgorica (TGD).

Practical takeaway

Book ahead, keep your licence, passport, booking reference and a payment card ready, and confirm any cross-border plans when you reserve. Your car meets you at arrivals, you pay at pickup, and you're on the coast road to Kotor or Budva in minutes. Browse the fleet, or see exactly how pickup works.
